Our after-school Eco Club has been hard at work this term, showing a real commitment to improving our school environment and supporting the wider community.

Each week, pupils take part in a range of activities focused on understanding and tackling litter. They began by carrying out a survey across the school grounds to identify problem areas, before taking action by collecting litter and helping to keep our environment clean and tidy.

The children have also been busy creating informative posters and preparing an assembly, which they proudly presented to the whole school this week. Their message was clear and powerful, encouraging everyone to take responsibility for looking after our environment.

Beyond the school gates, members of the Eco Club have also been out in the local community, taking part in litter-picking around Shirebrook. This has been a fantastic opportunity for pupils to make a positive contribution while representing the school with pride.

The club has required lots of hard work and dedication, but it has been wonderful to see how much the children have enjoyed the experience. They have shown great teamwork, enthusiasm, and a real sense of responsibility throughout.

We are incredibly proud of all our Eco Club members and the difference they are making! 🌍👏

We have celebrated NSPCC Number Day and invited parents to join in with the number fun. The classrooms and hall were full of excitement as children showed off their number-themed outfits, from bright jerseys covered in digits to handmade number badges and hats.

Families worked together to solve puzzles, play counting games, and tackle tricky maths challenges. There were number trails around the classroom, quick fire multiplication quizzes, and problem-solving activities that had everyone thinking hard and cheering when they found the right answers.

We were also lucky to have Abbie from Chesterfield FC Community Trust (CFC) join us. She delivered some fantastic, active games that got everyone moving while testing our knowledge and understanding of numbers. Children jumped, ran, and worked in teams to solve maths problems, proving that learning maths can be energetic as well as fun.

Parents loved getting involved and working alongside the children, and it was wonderful to see so much teamwork, laughter, and enthusiasm for maths throughout the day.

During EYFS literacy lessons, students have been engaged with the story “The Bumblebear” by Nadia Shireen to help young children understand the importance of celebrating differences.

The story follows Norman, a bear who adores honey. In a clever twist, he decides to disguise himself as a bee to gain constant access to honey. He claims to be a special bee from a far-off land, which explains why he looks different. Throughout the tale, the bees learn how to fend off predators like bears. However, when one bee discovers Norman's true identity, he is banished. Norman proves his worth by saving the day from a big bear, becoming a hero!

The children expressed why they enjoyed the story, and their responses showcased their learning progress:

Describes the main story settings, events and principal characters in increasing detail.

Begins to link sounds to some frequently used digraphs.

Uses their developing phonic knowledge to write things such as labels and captions, later progressing to simple sentences.

Enjoys an increasing range of print and digital books, both fiction and non-fiction.

Meanwhile, Year 4 pupils brought joy and excitement to residents at The Grange care home. Their enthusiastic singing and cheerful attitude helped create a festive atmosphere.

Both visits were a fantastic example of how our pupils show kindness and community spirit. We are extremely proud of the children for representing Model Village so positively and for helping to make Christmas a little more special for others.

As part of their learning, the class carried out a local study of the nearby park to identify its key features and think about ways it could be improved for everyone in the community.

During their visit, the children worked hard to spot and describe both the human and physical features of the park. They also completed observational drawings, shared their ideas about what they liked best, and discussed thoughtful suggestions for how the park could be made even better.

The pupils represented Model Village brilliantly, they were sensible, polite, and showed great awareness while walking safely across busy roads. It was a day full of learning, teamwork, and fun. Of course, there was time for a well-earned play on the park too!

This week, we came together to mark Remembrance Day through a powerful creative project: the Remembrance Poppy Art Project 2025.

Each class, from the youngest pupils to Year 6, used their observational skills to draw poppies, reflecting on their symbolism of remembrance, resilience and hope. These beautiful pieces were then combined into one large collaborative artwork, a vase filled with poppies which represents unity, gratitude and peace.

The project sought to capture the contrast between the devastation of war and the delicate, enduring beauty of the poppy, reminding us of all the sacrifices made by those who have served and continue to serve.

We’re proud that this artwork will be displayed as part of the community Remembrance Service at Shirebrook Leisure Centre, in partnership with the Town Council.

The children brought their very best singing voices to mark the occasion. The hall was filled with cheerful harvest songs, and some classes even treated everyone to a touch of polyphony (singing different lines at the same time!) 🎶

The school community showed incredible generosity once again. The many donations received have been shared with BLAST in Shirebrook, who are using them to support their community fridge initiative.

Even better, BLAST has now applied for funding to bring a community fridge right to the school gates! Hopefully, this will be successful and will complement Model Village Primary’s ongoing partnerships with Aldi and Lidl in supporting the local community.

A huge well done and thank you to everyone at Model Village Primary School for making the Harvest Festival such a joyful celebration of community spirit.

The Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) programme is dedicated to enhancing the quality of playtime in schools, acknowledging that play is vital for children's growth. Its goal is to foster environments where children can participate in creative, collaborative, and active play, which is essential for their learning and social development.

On Tuesday, October 14th, Model Village hosted more than 100 parents for an OPAL Play morning. Parents savoured a delicious sausage sandwich, attended a talk explaining the concept of OPAL Play, and then joined their children to partake in the enjoyable activities. Activities include a waterslide, a sandbox, scooters, water play and building blocks. The children (and adults) had a lovely morning.

The event was not only a delightful experience for all attendees but also an eye-opener for many parents who witnessed firsthand the benefits of structured yet flexible playtime.

During their visit, the children learned about the vital role the fire service plays in helping the public and explored the modern equipment used by firefighters today.

The trip linked perfectly to their History topic, The Great Fire of London, giving the children the opportunity to compare how fires are dealt with now to how they were managed in 1666. The pupils were also thrilled to see a real fire engine up close and discover the different tools it carries — excellent inspiration for their upcoming Design and Technology project, where they will be designing and making their own moving fire engines.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable and educational afternoon for everyone involved. Model Village Primary School would like to thank Mrs Johnson and Mr Edwardson for supporting the children during the visit, and Miss Kerry for leading such a fantastic learning experience.

The children are now much more engaged and content during lunchtime. This is exactly what we aimed for at Model – continuously striving to be the best for our children!

The enthusiasm and creativity of the students have been truly inspiring, as they explore and enjoy the new play zones. Teachers and staff have noticed a positive shift in the children’s interactions, with increased cooperation and imaginative play. Parents have also expressed their appreciation for the initiative, noting the excitement their children bring home each day.

The event featured a variety of activities, such as relay races with different movement styles, a treasure hunt, and games where children rolled balls into hoops to earn points. The kids had a fantastic time and showcased the school’s spirit remarkably well with their enthusiasm and excellent behaviour.
