Geography

How do we teach Geography at Model Village? 

Intent

At MVPS we are guided by the National Curriculum for Geography (2014). The National Curriculum for Geography aims to ensure that all pupils:  

• develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes 

• understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time 

• are competent in the geographical skills needed to: 

• collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes 

• interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) 

• communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length. 

Our intent is that our teaching of Geography will inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives.  Despite many of our children having a limited experience of the world around them, we aim to promote their interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. 

Implementation 

Geography is taught in blocks throughout the year and consideration has been given to ensure progression in knowledge, skills and understanding throughout the school. By the end of year 6, children will be able to draw comparisons and make connections between our own local area and a variety of geographical environments around the world.  Cross curricular outcomes in geography are planned for, with links between the English, Maths and Geography curriculums in particular to enable contextual learning. Teachers plan their lessons using a variety of approaches in order to appeal to the learning styles and abilities of all children, whether they have SEND, PP funding or have an aptitude for Geography.  Where appropriate, teachers plan educational visits to give children first hand experiences that will enhance their learning.  The golden thread of communication weaves its way through our Geography curriculum as children are given the opportunity to practice verbal and written communication methods in a practical context. 

Impact 

Through a well structured and well taught geography curriculum, our children are exposed to the geographical knowledge, skills and understanding that they will need to become enthusiastic geographers. We assess the pupils’ knowledge through: 

• Quizzes  

• Pupil discussion  

• Evidence in pupil books  

• Assessment against planned learning outcomes 

Opportunities for internal and external moderation are planned throughout the school year.
