Reading

We are committed at Model Village not only to teach children to read, but also to love books. For children starting school, reading will be taught through the Little Wandle systematic synthetic programme. Children are encouraged and expected to read regularly,  with a teacher or teaching assistant, and increasingly on their own at school and at home. Children take part in guided reading which encourages interactive reading and ensures your child/ren will have experience of reading regularly.

Reading At Home

We recommend reading with your child/ren as often as possible as this provides valuable practice and also helps to build confidence. Reading together should be an enjoyable experience for you and your child. Please remember that the colour levels are only a guide and there should be no pressure on children to “progress” to the next colour. If the child can read 9 out of every 10 words, the book is generally at the right level, but there are also times when children enjoy being read to. It is important that children experience the success of reading familiar or “easy” books so he/she learns to use them for relaxation and enjoyment. If the book is too difficult and you feel your child is becoming frustrated, please give lots of help or simply read it to him or her.

Book Lists

Sometimes we are asked by children and parents to suggest reading books. There are many amazing books being published each week and many which are firm favourites. We have put together some lists which might help you to discover a great new story, and we have also included some links to children book websites.
